Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Cuisine: Chinese
Serves: 2 servings

Ingredients

  1. 14 oz firm tofu, crumbled
  2. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  3. 2 tablespoons doubanjiang (spicy bean paste)
  4. 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  5. 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  6. 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  7. 2 green onions, chopped
  8. Rice for serving

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing all your ingredients. Crumble the firm tofu into bite-sized pieces and set aside. Chop the green onions, separating the white parts from the green tops.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix the cornstarch with the vegetable broth until well combined. This will be used to thicken the sauce later.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the crumbled tofu and stir-fry for about 5 minutes until it starts to brown slightly.
  4. Add the white parts of the chopped green onions to the skillet and stir-fry for an additional 2 minutes until they become fragrant.
  5. Stir in the doubanjiang (spicy bean paste) and soy sauce, mixing well to coat the tofu evenly with the sauce.
  6. Pour in the broth and cornstarch mixture, stirring continuously to ensure the sauce thickens evenly. Cook for another 3-5 minutes, allowing the sauce to bubble and coat the tofu.
  7. Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, remove the skillet from heat. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  8. Serve the Quick Mao Pao Tofu over cooked rice, garnished with the green tops of the chopped green onions for added freshness and flavor.

Tips

  1. Press the Tofu: For an even firmer texture, press the tofu before crumbling it to remove excess moisture. This helps it absorb more flavor and achieve a better browning.
  2. Customize the Spice: Adjust the amount of doubanjiang to suit your spice tolerance. If you prefer a milder dish, start with less and add more as needed.
  3. Add Veggies: Feel free to toss in additional vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas during the stir-frying step for extra nutrition and color.
  4. Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh green onions not only enhance the flavor but also add a beautiful pop of color to your dish.
  5. Serve with Perfect Rice: For the best experience, serve your Mao Pao Tofu over fluffy jasmine or basmati rice to soak up the delicious sauce.
