Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Cuisine: Chinese
Serves: 12 dumplings

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  2. 1 cup bok choy, chopped
  3. 1/2 cup mushrooms, minced
  4. 2 green onions, chopped
  5. 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  6. 12 dumpling wrappers
  7. Soy sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing all your ingredients. Peel and devein the shrimp if you haven't done so already. Rinse the bok choy and chop it into small pieces. Clean the mushrooms and mince them finely. Chop the green onions and grate the ginger.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the shrimp, chopped bok choy, minced mushrooms, chopped green onions, and grated ginger. Mix everything together thoroughly until well combined.
  3. Take a dumpling wrapper and place it on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the shrimp and vegetable filling into the center of the wrapper.
  4. Moisten the edges of the dumpling wrapper with a little water using your fingertip. This will help the wrapper seal properly.
  5. Fold the dumpling in half to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together firmly to seal the dumpling, making sure there are no air pockets. You can also pleat the edges for a decorative touch if desired.
  6. Repeat the filling and sealing process with the remaining wrappers and filling until all dumplings are made.
  7. Prepare a steamer by filling a pot with water and bringing it to a boil. If you have a bamboo steamer, line it with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking.
  8. Carefully place the dumplings in the steamer, making sure they are not touching each other to avoid sticking. You may need to steam them in batches depending on the size of your steamer.
  9. Cover the steamer and steam the dumplings for about 10-15 minutes, or until the shrimp is cooked through and the dumplings are tender.
  10. Once cooked, carefully remove the dumplings from the steamer and place them on a serving plate.
  11. Serve the dumplings warm with soy sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your homemade shrimp and vegetable steamed dumplings!

Tips

  1. Keep your dumpling wrappers covered with a damp towel while working to prevent them from drying out.
  2. Don't overfill the dumplings - about 1 tablespoon of filling is perfect to ensure they seal properly.
  3. Use cold water when moistening wrapper edges for the best seal.
  4. If you don't have a bamboo steamer, a metal steamer or even a colander over boiling water works great.
  5. Make sure dumplings aren't touching in the steamer to prevent sticking.
  6. For extra flavor, try adding a splash of sesame oil to your filling mixture.
  7. Leftover dumplings can be frozen uncooked and steamed directly from frozen, adding 2-3 minutes to cooking time.
